THE SEEDING OF DIVISION

Can you smell the division being seeded through this country? It has been happening for a while. A deliberate effort, or just bad policy? Either way it needs to stop.

Division between the people is the first sign of a failing nation, and that is what has been going on for at least a decade.

The role of government is to unify, not divide — because division leads to unrest, and unrest leads to violence. It leads to the worst things that can happen to a country and its people.

We have been, and must strive to be, a united nation. One that is proud of its fair go and its g’day mate, how ya going. We should take pride in the many nations that have already arrived here and the ones still coming. Australia has always prided itself on how many peoples can set down the old history and the old pain and unite as Australians. That has to be supported again, and encouraged. We should not be reopening the past to stir old wounds — we should be reopening it to heal them.

We are multiracial and multicultural, and we should acknowledge what this country and its people have gained from that.

Yes, there were wrongs. The treatment of Aboriginal people from the beginning of colonisation was a disgrace, and it was set in motion by the ignorance and the orders of the British Crown. I do not think the people who came can carry the blame for it. They were cogs in a very large machine — one that set out to erase Indigenous peoples, traditional societies, their histories and their stories, right across the world.

The damage is done and we must acknowledge it. But we cannot let it divide us any further. We are on Australian land, and all Australians belong here.
