ENTERTAINING, BUT NOT GOVERNING

Back to work. Parliament was interesting today — one member lost his temper, swore, and walked out. He was censured, and has to apologise tomorrow.

Question time is entertaining, but it does not seem to achieve much beyond producing sound bites for the evening news. The government rarely answers the hard question; the tactic is to throw it back at the opposition and explain how it is their fault. The opposition does the same in reverse.

Something is missing in there. Proper dialogue about how to fix what the country is going through. Parties working on a problem together rather than trading blame across a chamber.

Sitting in that room, you notice the incentives are wrong. Nobody in question time is rewarded for saying “that is a fair point, here is what we could do about it.” They are rewarded for the clip.

Meanwhile, here is a memo I am working on — putting the facts together to show Australia should be fast-tracking internal production of transport fuel rather than relying on imports.
