A bit about me

Graduated 1997, Honours in Mechanical Engineering, Monash University. Started work in Sale, Victoria in the O&G industry, transferred to Perth 1999, took a year off in 2001 as I became hooked on kitesurfing, ended up in Thailand and built, managed and taught at my kitesurfing schools in Thailand from 2001–2006, returned to O&G and Perth in 2006.

Been on a long spiritual journey and have always been "a bit" of an alternative hippy. A seeker of truth and understanding, I became a yoga teacher, studying the scriptures of all faiths, history, physics, and politics.

My motto: Question Everything.

At start of COVID I left the O&G again, built a Farming Travellers Community south of Margs on my 37 acres farm, amazing experience, I learnt a lot about communal living methods, council issues appeared, family court issues with the mother of my kids, it ended badly on multiple fronts, fined $130k, accidental fire, traveller got burnt, and I lost the farm, I still can't see my kids (FVRO / Family Law Royal Commission is one of my policies).

The system gave me a hiding, but I learnt so much about what is wrong and what is right with Gov. I see it now as training for my political career, lol. I am happy to discuss all of it, my mistakes, my lessons, my journey.

Since I lost my farm, I spent a lot of time in Canberra watching the pollies in Parliament, and studying everything I could. I've also lived on the poverty line, lived in a tent in Canberra for 8 months, lived on JobSeeker, understand the life of the homeless, seen the issues affecting our towns and cities, the Meth epidemic and the loss of hope for many. I have crossed the Nullarbor 4 times — 2 return trips — and travelled up and down the East Coast.

Why have you decided to run in the by-election?

The 3 parties' policies do not match what I believe Australia needs for a bountiful and beautiful future. They are not representing Australians or Australia any more. I believe they are compromised, have too many influences, and lobbyists are instructing their policy. They have lost their ability to make hard decisions; they are bought and paid for. They are afraid of the Media. They are only making decisions for votes, not the good of our Nation. One Nation is merely giving voters the illusion of Choice, it's more of the same.

Our people are suffering and there is little real action, nothing new, just trying to fix things the same way we have always done it.

The core of the party doctrine is TRUTH, INTEGRITY, ACCOUNTABILITY in government, which means full Transparency and no secrets. We represent the people, just as a DEMOCRACY is meant to operate.

Sovereign Australia governs for the people and our Nation. We are a centrist party which believes in a social safety net for all Australians, but also believes in supporting industry, mining, job creation, creating opportunities, to inspire and energise the population. We need productivity and wealth to pay for the Social safety net.

I am an engineer, trained to engineer solutions, and our nation needs a PLAN, a New Deal. This is the plan, at A Modern Movement Australia.

What are the key issues you are running on, and what policies do you have to address them?

I have a detailed list of policies and solutions on the site. It's a huge undertaking to govern a Nation, and Australia has a lot of issues. I write, with AI, short memos detailing the issues along with our solutions, then summarise them on the web as an individual page. Check them out here.

There are a lot of issues when you start to dig. To hone in on a few, here are the top 12+3 for the By-election. Local, State and Federal.

Do you live in the electorate?

I live in Cooloongup, have been coming and going for the last 2½ years, just returned from a political research trip to Canberra and the East Coast. Been in WA for 35+ years. Did year 11 / 12 at Christ Church Grammar in Perth.

What order will you preference One Nation, Labor and the Liberals?

I have placed all 3 at the bottom of the preferences. The order, I can't decide, lol. Each has some positive policy, while each has some bad policy.

I prefer the independents and minor parties as they may have the balance of power vote in government — think the federal Senate at the moment. I prefer them to the bums on seats who can't speak up, can't have conscience votes, must toe the party line Labor / Liberal MPs. Look at Georgia Tree, no voice. That's Labor for ya, and our Nation suffers for it. A few determine policy, while we elect members who have no say.

My goal: build a party to challenge the majors in state and federal politics, to have the best policy that encourages MPs from other parties to join.

How to vote

Polling day is Saturday 29 August 2026. Polling places open 8am and close 6pm. You can also vote early from Monday 17 August.

1. You will receive one ballot paper for the Legislative Assembly, with 16 candidates on it. You must number every box, 1 to 16, for your vote to count.
2. Write 1 next to MURRELL, Brett — last on the paper, with no party name beside it. Look for the last name on the list.
3. Number the remaining candidates 2 to 16, in any order you choose. Every box must carry a number.
4. Fold your ballot paper and place it in the ballot box.

Why I am on the ballot as an Independent. Sovereign Australia is not yet a registered political party, so no party name can be printed beside my name. Nothing about the platform changes — only what fits on the ballot paper.

Where the money goes

Getting the message out across every community in the district requires corflutes, print materials and physical presence. That costs money. Brett has no party machine behind him, no donor class and no corporate backing.

• Corflutes — signs across Secret Harbour, Golden Bay, Singleton, Karnup and Rockingham.
• Print materials — policy cards, flyers and how-to-vote cards for every polling booth in the district.
• Community events — town halls, community meetings and street events across the district.
• Digital ads — reaching voters on social media with the policies that affect them directly.

The rules this campaign runs by

• No corporate donations. This campaign does not accept money from mining companies, banks, developers, or any interest with a stake in the outcome.
• Full transparency. All donations disclosed as required by the WA Electoral Commission. No dark money.
• Direct to campaign. Every dollar reaches this district — not party HQ, not interstate campaigns.
